The goal of Primary I is to develop the student's language, speech, and auditory skills.
The students are grouped into classrooms by age and language level. Every thirty minutes children alternate between small group instruction of 2-3 children in their classrooms, to larger group instruction of 10-12 children in the Discovery Center.
In the classroom, the children work on speech, language, auditory training, conversational language, vocabulary, language experience, and sentence cards.
The Discovery Center is a play-based classroom. The teacher who facilitates the room is certified in deaf and early childhood education. Using authentic assessments, children's progress is recorded according to the Illinois Learning Standards. While in the Discovery Center children participate in a variety of activities including circle time, thematic experience, music, gross motor, pre-academics and learning center play.
